In your own words…

For Friday:

Fill out exhibition labels for the artworks created in your residency period. I do not need label information for the small projects.

For Saturday:

Read The Creative Independent’s “How to Write an Artist Statement”

There are many different ways of writing artist statements. The style that may be most suitable is dependent on where you are submitting the work.

Is it on your personal website, for a grant proposal, or a gallery exhibition? Different locations have different (often unspoken) expectations.

With The Creative Independent’s suggestions, you will write an artist statement for inclusion in our exhibit. This will be a more standard, versatile statement that could be used for applying to other opportunities.

Language matters! Fluffy art talk that makes you sound prestigious or intellectual isn’t always accessible! Consider your audience. How can you speak to them so they understand your intentions?

Examples:

Dread Scott

Cindy Sherman

Mary Mattingly (manifesto style not always acceptable for submission)

Misc. Artists (Though concise is good, these selections are a little shorter than what I suggest you aim for.)

Jill Beth Hannes (This one’s long, but gives a good variety of context)

Please submit your artist statements in the Exhibition Materials folder in Google Drive by 9am 6/17

Also for Saturday:

Bring a question for the closing event!
